Acai berry is a native fruit of the South America and is a relative of the blueberry, raspberry, and cranberry family. It is a small fruit, typically an inch long and is similar in size to grapes but with a dark reddish and purple hue. It comes from the acai palm which is found in abundance in Central and South America. Recent research has found that acai berries contain antioxidants, with some parties going as far as touting it as the superfood of the century.

Acai berry is typically consumed in various ways. These include freeze-dried powder form, acai fruit juice, liquid, pills, shakes and more. Many sources claim that the best way to consume acai berry is by liquid method. Thus the popularity of acai berries continues to grow. Whether by the inherent goodness that compels people to keep consuming this fruit or by the clever marketing tactics of nutritional supplements companies, there is no denying that acai fruit juice is becoming ever more popular and will only increase in demand.

The fact that acai products are very popular nowadays, especially in the United States, stems from the recent discovery of the exotic fruit’s antioxidant potential. Antioxidants are thought to be the most effective agent in slowing the body against damages due to aging process and due to free radicals such as oxygen radicals and peroxyl radicals. Thus, acai berry with its naturally occurring antioxidant properties inevitably gained huge worldwide following as health-conscious people seek ever more ways to stay young and healthy.

Acai berries and acai fruit juice are vigorously promoted to have various beneficial properties that include the capacity to slow down ageing, reduce the risks of heart diseases and many more health benefits. While the antioxidant property can never be denied, research has yet proven that antioxidant will slow down ageing significantly. The validity of other claims such as weight loss and slimming properties remain to be determined – no established medical facts have concretely proven this to be true.

In actual fact, acai fruit juice does not contain significantly more antioxidant contents than other berries such as pomegranate juice or blueberry juice. Lab results have shown that blueberry juice have higher antioxidant activity than acai fruit juice. Many commercial companies will try to promote an acai fruit juice based on its Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity claim. More commonly known as ORAC, its value for acai fruit juice is still lower than some other fruits and legumes such as blueberry and red kidney bean.

Thus, as a smart consumer, one should not easily be led into all the acai fruit juice hype and marketing ploy and snap up the expensive nutrition products without much research of their own. However, acai fruit juice does have its nutritional properties and can help to improve well-being, increase energy levels and remove toxins from the body. The only thing to remember is not to be fooled into thinking that acai fruit juice is a miracle food that can solve all kinds of health problems.
